VA Overhaul May Give Vets Choice Of Hospital Care

More veterans may be headed to local hospitals, instead of VA facilities.

Congressional leaders have agreed to spend about $17 billion on an overhaul of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Instead of waiting in VA hospitals, many veterans would be given the choice of going to a local hospital.

North country Congressman Bill Owens says this would help many Fort Drum veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

"And secondarily, it gives a boost to local institutions that may need additional patients in order to keep that facility viable in a local community," said Owens (D. - 21st District).

Lawmakers hope to send the bill to the president's desk for signing by the end of the week.
