It may be decades later, but Vietnam veterans will be getting a well-deserved "thank you" and "welcome home" as part of this weekend's Veterans Appreciation Day at Clarkson University's Cheel Arena.

Organizers of the third annual event say all veterans and their families are invited to attend Saturday's activities that begin with ceremony at noon.

There will be information on a variety of services available to veterans and their families and activities to honor the local heroes.

"When they came home back in '74, they didn't get the thanks, it was just 'go about your day, you didn't do anything for us,'" organizer Brandon Kelley said.

"The community really needs to come out and thank them for that, whether it be 30, 40 years later," Kelly said. "It's never too late."

Bill Murphy said organizers want to make Vietnam vets "more aware of how we appreciate their service and also to educate the veteran -- he or she -- with respect to the services that are available to them. It's a constantly changing situation in terms of the benefits that are available."

There will also be entertainment, food and camaraderie throughout the afternoon.
