For Your Health: Preventing the Onset of Diabetes

Thanks to a $10,000 state grant, the Watertown YMCA is offering a free 16-week diabetes prevention program.

Your doctor can help you determine if you're eligible.

Exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and not being overweight are all ways to help prevent the onset of diabetes.

With an estimated 57 million Americans considered pre-diabetic, the state is offering a diabetes prevention program at 10 YMCAs and the one in Watertown is one of them.

Organizer Michelle Graham of the Watertown YMCA wants to help make that happen.

She says participants must have a doctor's referral.

Along with an elevated blood sugar level, other risk factors used to determine eligibility include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight and being inactive.

The group will meet weekly and participants will also get use of the Y's facilities throughout the 16 weeks.

For more information on this program you can call Michele Graham at the Watertown YMCA at (315) 782-3100.
