For Your Health: The Importance Of Eating Breakfast

As you pick up clothes and supplies for back to school, don't forget to put some healthy breakfast food on your shopping list.

School busses need fuel to get kids to school and the kids need fuel of their own.

That's why breakfast is so important.

"Kids who eat breakfast do better in school. They do better academically than children who do not eat breakfast," said Cathy Moore, registered dietician with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County.

Moore advices parents to think outside of the box - literally - because cereal is often not your best option, especially those brands targeting children.

She recommends choosing a cereal geared more toward adults which you can sweeten yourself with fresh fruit or raisins or even add nuts.

"It doesn't have to be cereal and it doesn't have to be even breakfast food. If you have leftover foods from last night, if you want to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, all those are healthy options," said Moore.

Eggs are a good choice, so are pancakes, french toast or waffles.

More advices you stay away from the ready-made varieties because they contain extra sodium and fat.

Her advice is to make them yourself and freeze them.

Other healthy options include whole wheat toast, fruit and fruit juices, yogurt, cheese and milk (1 percent or skim is best).

So, as you buy your kids new clothes to wear to school, make sure you also buy nutritious breakfast foods so they start their day feeling as good as good as they look.
