Father, Son Die In St. Lawrence County Crash
A father and son died in an accident near Canton accident Tuesday.
State police say 81 year old Theron Butterfield of Potsdam was westbound on the Morley-Potsdam Road in the town of Canton when he lost control of his car on the slush-covered road and slid into the path of an oncoming pickup truck driven by 48 year old Larry Felt of Canton.
Felt's pickup struck the passenger side of Butterfield's car, which was occupied by Butterfield's 51 year old son, Thomas.
Thomas Butterfield was pronounced dead at the scene. Theron Butterfield was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Police say the accident happened around 4:30 p.m.
Felt was uninjured.
Shown above and below are images of the vehicles the day after the crash.
Another accident happened on the same road several hours later, but with only minor injuries.
Members of the Morley Fire Department, meanwhile, are mourning the younger Butterfield's death.
A member of the fire police, Thomas Butterfield had been with the Morley department since 2009.
"Someone you could always count on to do stuff that you wanted him to do," is how Fire Chief Mike Perkins described Thomas.
Firefighters solemnly draped a black banner over the front of a fire truck where Butterfield's turnout gear was hung.
Known as T-Bay, he had been dedicated to fire service for over 20 years, also serving in the Parishville and West Potsdam departments.
Morley First Assistant Chief Joe Brooks said volunteers had no idea Thomas was involved in the accident when they arrived on the scene.
"It made it hard looking in the vehicle and looking and the person and knowing that that's one of your members, but we have to carry on and do what we're trained to do," said Brooks.
Firefighters say he'll be remembered for his humor, dedication and warm smile.
Many of those we spoke with say Tom Butterfield got his dedication and commitment to fire service from his father, who was a charter member of the West Potsdam Volunteer Department.
