2 Dogs Survive of 4 Left On Lewis County RoadsideOfficials in Lewis County want to know who abandoned four dogs on the side of the road earlier this week. They were left on Boonsville Road in Lyonsdale. Two are now safe at the Lewis County Humane Society. The other two died. "It's unusual that there were four of them, probably all from the same litter," said Patti Gorby, director of the Lewis County Humane Society. Lyonsdale dog catcher Roger Burriss responded to calls Monday night from passersby who saw the abandoned dogs. Burriss said two of them had died by the time he arrived, apparently hit by a car. "They were definitely scared and wet," Burriss said. "It was raining the night that I went out to get them, pouring down rain." Burris said abandoned dogs are a big problem and it's a frustrating one, because the alternative is very simple. "There's a place to take them," he said. "We have a no-kill shelter." Gorby says there is a fee to surrender dogs at the shelter, but she's usually willing to work with people who can't afford to pay. She says she wants to find whoever abandoned the dogs. Anyone with information can call the humane society at 315-376-8349 "There are laws against animal abandonment in New York state," Gorby said. "It can be up to a $1,000 fine or a year in jail." She says there's no reason for the dogs to have been abandoned. She's says they are perfectly adoptable and will be great pets. "Oh, they're going to be great pets," Gorby said. "Somebody is going to be very lucky." Officials say the dogs are about a year old and are in good shape. They'll be available for adoption in about a week. Gorby says the shelter has already received dozens of calls from people who want to adopt the dogs. |
