2 Soldiers Die In Separate Afghan Attacks

Fort Drum officials have confirmed the death of one 10th Mountain Division soldier and announced the death of another. The two died in separate incidents in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Shawn Farrell II, 24, of Accord, N.Y., died April 28, in Nejrab District, Kapisa province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Farrell was an infantryman with 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Pfc. Christian Chandler, 20, of Trenton, Texas died April 28 in Baraki Barak District, Logar province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Chandler was an infantryman with 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Farrell joined the Army in September 2006. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas. He arrived at Fort Drum in May 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan from March 2011 to March 2012. Farrell deployed to Afghanistan with his unit in November 2013.

Farrell's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals, the Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Air Assault Badge. He completed the Warrior Leader Course, the Combat Life Savers Course and the Air Assault Course.

Farrell is survived by his wife and parents.

Chandler joined the Army in October 2012. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he arrived at Fort Drum in February 2013 and deployed with his unit in October 2013 to Afghanistan.

Chandler's awards and decorations include Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He completed the Combat Life Savers Course.

Chandler is survived by his mother and stepfather.
