200 Apply for 50 NYAB Jobs On First Day Of Hiring Process

The WorkPlace in Watertown began accepting applications Monday for 50 positions at New York Air Brake.

The company is closing its facility in Kingston, Ontario, and moving operations to Watertown.

Kington's loss will be Watertown's gain when it comes to jobs.

"This morning we started taking applications for the production jobs at New York Air Brake and it's been a steady flow of people, which is what we though it was going to be.  These are coveted jobs and it's great news for our community," said WorkPlace Executive Director Cheryl Mayforth.

Air Brake is looking for applicants with a GED or high school diploma and some experience in production.

More than 200 people picked up applications Monday, including Shawn Susice.

"I was thinking it would be a good opportunity to expand my horizons and move on to something for a better career," he said.

But if the sheer number of people who picked up applications is any indication, the competition is stiff.

"For the amount of pay I've heard they get and the amount of jobs, people out of work that need jobs, it doesn't surprise me at all that there's going to be a lot of applicants," said Susice.

If you'd like to fill out an application for a production job at New York Air Brake, it's not too late.

The WorkPlace is accepting applications until March 15.
