3 Highway Workers Lose Jobs So Town Can Pay For Road Repairs

Three Fowler town highway workers have lost their jobs so the town can afford to repair roads.

The town board decided to cut three of nine highway worker jobs in a cost-cutting move to save money for needed road repairs.

Town officials say by cutting the three jobs they anticipate saving close to $66,000 this year and close to $150,000 next year.

There are 56 miles of town road in Fowler.

Last year the town only paved about a mile due to financial constraints.

"We feel really bad about laying off these workers. They're great workers...It's going to be a transition period for the whole department to work together to figure out a game plan of how to fix the roads," said town Councilwoman Natalie Spilman.

Spilman says the board will reevaluate the highway department's financial position later on and isn't ruling out being able to restore some of the positions in the future.
