Feedback: Man Accused Of Deliberately Ramming Family's Vehicle
An off-duty corrections officer is accused of ramming his SUV into a vehicle which had his wife, children and mother-in-law inside.
Four people were hurt, one seriously.
It happened on State Route 310 in the St. Lawrence County town of Potsdam and apparently began with a domestic incident.
According to police, a corrections officer for the county jail had an argument with his wife earlier in the day.
He is identifed as Douglas Matthews, 32, of Miner Street in Canton.
His wife, Jenelle Matthews, 32, her two sons - ages five and nine - and her mother, Susan Latimer, 65, were on Route 310 going towards Madrid, when her husband began following them, police said.
Police said someone in the wife's vehicle called 911 to report they were being followed.
The dispatcher told them to turn around and head towards Canton where police were being dispatched.
According to police, as the vehicle was turning around, Matthews deliberately rammed his SUV into the family's vehicle and pushed it off the road.
The vehicle overturned into a ditch.
Matthews' Toyota Sequoia ended up on top of the Toyota Camry.
The mother-in-law was airlifted to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Vermont with serious head and abdominal injuries. She was in stable condition Friday night.
The mother and her two boys were treated at the scene and taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with what were described as non life-threatening injuries.
State police said Matthews was charged with one count of assault, first degree; four counts of reckless endangerment, first degree; and endangering the welfare of a child, all as the result of the incident on Route 310.
He was additionally charged with reckless endangerment, second degree; criminal mischief, third degree; and harassment, second degree, resulting from the domestic dispute earlier in the day.
He was ordered held on $100,000 bail.
Matthews has been a corrections officer at the county jail since July 2005.
Sheriff Kevin Wells said Matthews has been suspended without pay.
