Jefferson County, like the rest of the nation, is seeing more people use food stamps. The county currently has 5,700 active cases, according to the county's Department of Social Services. "I think as the economy worsens, people want to make sure they have whatever support they can,." said Laura Cerow, social services commissioner. The need is obvious at the national level - 32 million people use food stamps. So more money is flowing from the federal and state governments, including $13 million just set aside for the north country.
