"Ball Of Fire" Greets Lewis County Volunteers

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused an abandoned home in the Lewis County town of Croghan to go up in flames early Wednesday morning.

Volunteers from several departments were called to 9977 Third Road at approximately 4:30 a.m.

When they arrived, officials described the home as being a "ball of fire".

Firefighters were unable to save the house, but managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby farm.

Officials say no one lived at the home, but there was still power running into the structure.

Investigators don't believe arson was involved.

The property is owned by John Honer of Second Road in the town of Croghan.

Croghan, Beaver Falls, Castorland, New Bremen and Lowville fire departments were called to the scene.
