4th SUNY Canton Presidential Candidate Meets The Community

One of the five finalists for the SUNY Canton presidency downplayed published reports of discontent over his leadership style during a meeting with the campus community Thursday.

During the three years Dr. Philip Conroy has been president of Vermont Technical College, he said he has faced a serious budget deficit, declining enrollments and numerous administrative staff changes.

Conroy said he feels a college like SUNY Canton should cater to the needs of the workforce and the needs of the students.

He said he is committed to an "applied education" to help teach students how to do things and would work to stabilize the college from the pressures imposed on it from SUNY Central in Albany.

"Not all students are going to learn the same way so applied education is really an important part of what they do," said Conroy.

Conroy is the fourth candidate to visit the college.

The final candidate will meet with the campus community on Monday.
