Five people are in jail for allegedly operating a methamphetamine lab in a Watertown apartment.

Police received a call around 7 p.m. Sunday tipping them off to the smell of a meth lab in use at 675 Bronson Street.

Under arrest are 37 year old Daniel Merritt, 35 year old Edgar Richardson II, 32 year old Joel Gillespie, 22 year old Shawn Exford and 31 year old Kellie Belcher.

"Patrol officers responding were able to determine that a meth lab was in progress," said Watertown police Sgt. James Spencer.

"The New York State Police and the drug task force were called in to deal with the situation and we later arrested five people from that residence."

All are charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Police were tight-lipped about their investigation for several hours, declining to disclose why they were there or the indentity of the suspects.

All five sat in handcuffs, four in front of the house and the fifth in back being interrogated by police.

Around 9 p.m., National Grid cut power to the house because of code violations, according to Watertown Code Enforcement Supervisor Shawn McWayne, who was on scene.

Around 11 p.m., 7 News reporter Candace Dunkley witnessed police removing bags from the house.

All five were arraigned in Watertown city court Monday morning, when they were ordered to be held without bail.
