Grandmother Walks for Climate Change
Following your passion can wear out a lot of shoe leather. Just ask Greta Browne. Browne is 65 years old and she's made it her mission to walk up the East Coast to spread the word about climate change. "I'm hoping to inspire people and make people think a little bit and to be one drop in the bucket of change," says Browne. She started her journey in the New Orleans area in March at a rate of about 10 miles per day. She's been tracking her journey online, and now she's made it all the way to the North Country. Browne says she's doing the walk to create a better future for her three grandchildren and all grandchildren. She spends her days walking, and she doesn't approach people. If people approach her, she gives them a flyer about how they can help the environment. She wants people to see her walking and remember they have options besides driving. They can walk, bike, or take public transportation. Spreading the message isn't always easy. "Every so often somebody will give me the thumbs down," she says. Browne said her knee went out at one point, too. However, overall, she says it's been good for her. She lost 20 lbs., and the people she meets have been encouraging, "It all fits together," says Browne. "If you do what's right for the environment, it's also right for your pocketbook. It's also right for your love handles. It's all good." She plans to wrap up her walk in two weeks. Most Popular |
