It may not feel like winter outside right now, but workers for St. Lawrence County's Community Development Program are helping a homeowner prepare for cold temperatures by installing sidewall insulation.

The county's weatherization program is still waiting for close to $2 million in federal stimulus money to invest in helping eligible homeowners improve energy efficiency.

As officials wait for the funding, a backlog of eligible homeowners remains.

7 News has learned that the CDP program has a backlog of 578 unfinished projects heading into the upcoming winter.

Projects that include weatherstripping, adding insulation to walls or ceilings and cleaning or replacement of old inefficient heating systems.

At one point last year, there was a waiting list of 800 people with an anticipated delay of four to five years.

Last year approximately 120 homes were weatherized in St. Lawrence County.

The problem is there are more homes needing insulation, new windows and doors and other improvements than there is money or people to do the work.

Despite the wait for federal stimulus funding, CDP has been able to keep work going through its state weatherization contract.

With more money invested in the program, officials hope more low income households will be able to be helped.

Eligibility information for weatherization assistance can be obtained by contacting the Community Development Program at 386-1102.
