A portion of Route 3 in the Jefferson County town of Ellisburg was closed to traffic part of Wednesday afternoon due to damage from an oversized load.

According to state police, a large tower used for wind turbines separated from a truck at approximately 1:20 p.m.

Authorities closed the highway between Benton Road and Bolton Road to allow workers to repave a portion of the damaged road.

Route 3 reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The truck was coming from Ontario, Canada, and was headed to a wind farm in the Buffalo area.

The vehicle, which was registered to Equipment Express in Canada, passed through customs inspection at the Port of Ogdensburg.

Investigators are trying to figure out why the tower separated from the truck.
