Politics Tuesday: More Calls to Quit
The camps of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman and Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava have been going back and forth for days, each saying the other should quit. Today, the Scozzafava folks are out with statements from Jefferson Counrty Republican Party chairman Don Coon, and St. Lawrence County chair Nancy Martin. Both say Hoffman should quit. From Martin's statement: "Doug Hoffman claims to be a conservative, but he seems to forget that honesty and integrity are the most important qualities for conservatives. Mr. Hoffman lied to my face, and he does not deserve to call himself a conservative. Other than appearing on cable news programs and releasing comical poll numbers, Hoffman adds nothing to this race but spoiling a safe Republican seat." Jude Seymour eloquently makes the point about these dueling 'calls to quit.' These kind of press releases evoke the same feeling you'd have if you were watching your soon-to-be-divorced parents engaged in a nasty, name-calling fight in a very public place. To which one can only add, this is a divorce, wihin the Republican Party. *** Hoffman, meanwhile, picks up the backing of Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. From the press release: “We don’t need Tweedle-Dum or Tweedle-Dee, we need Hoffman. He’s not afraid to stand up and speak the truth,” Rohrabacher said, “A Republican Majority in name only means nothing, especially in a district that can elect a real Republican.” He also got the backing of former Republican National Congressional Committee chairman Tom Cole. From Cole's statement: Doug Hoffman, the conservative, clearly represents the main stream values and positions of the Republican Party. He opposes the stimulus, cap and trade, card check, the Democratic health care bill and the Obama Administration's reckless spending binge. He is a pro-life fiscal conservative who is committed to restraining the growth of government. And Hoffman is committed to fighting and winning the war in Afghanistan. *** The New York Times had a reporter on the road in Watertown over the weekend, finding the center of operations for Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. The entire article is here. The money quote: “The No. 1 victory will be to defeat Dede,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, which works to elect candidates who oppose abortion. Ms. Dannenfelser, along with members of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes efforts to legalize same-sex marriage, are helping to coordinate efforts on the ground in support of Mr. Hoffman. Although the public campaign has barely mentioned gay marriage - and has only lightly touched on abortion - I've been told that Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava's stand on both issues was the dividing line that moved conservatives from indifference to outright hostility. *** There are so many articles/blogs about the 23rd now. If you use the Googles you will get a torrent, of which I'm pointing to a few that have new information, or a different take on the election. Here's one: www.observer.com/2009/politics/how-ny-23-can-change-obama-narrative The gist: Democrats are helped by the race. That's if they win, of course. The drumbeat of 'Hoffman is surging' is getting louder. Most Popular |
