The size of Bill Owens' win grew Wednesday, as more election districts across the 23rd reported in. As of 5:30 pm, Owens led Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman 65,913-60,496. Republican Dede Scozzafava's total also grew, to 7885. Just over 92 percent of the vote has been counted. Some counties are still not reporting complete totals, including St. Lawrence, Oswego and Oneida.. However, it's highly unlikely the districts not reporting in will change the outcome of the race. Earlier... Shortly after midnight, Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman conceded the race for the 23rd Congressional District to Democrat Bill Owens. Hoffman told supporters that he spoke with Owens by phone and congratulated him on his win. With nearly 90 percent of districts reporting, Owens had 61,259 votes compared to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman's 56,866. Republican Dede Scozzafava had 6,926. Because of the closeness of the race, voting machine problems reported in Lewis, St. Lawrence and Fulton counties, and absentee ballots, the race was initially too close to call. At approximately 12:30 a.m., Owens delivered a victory speech in which he said he was humbled by the support he received. The attached video includes Hoffman's concession speech as well as Owens' victory address. Most Popular |
