Doug Hoffman says he may run for Congress again and go a second round with newly anointed Congressman Bill Owens. At the same time, we're learning that round one, last week's election, was closer than originally thought. Hoffman supporters are now saying he may have conceded a little too early. "I don't think we would have conceded at midnight or whatever time we did concede that night," said Hoffman spokesman Rob Ryan. Reports say some counties made mistakes with the vote count and that Hoffman had more support than he originally thought. In Jefferson County alone, Hoffman racked up an extra 700 votes. The latest numbers have Congressman Bill Owens leading by just over 3,000 votes, with thousands of absentee ballots yet to count. It means the race is tight, but Hoffman's staff doesn't believe it's enough to stage a come back. "It would be wishful thinking if we could close the gap," said Ryan. The close nature of last week's race has provided Hoffman with the steam to consider a rerun. Hoffman says he plan to run as a Republican. As for Congressman Bill Owens, we asked him about the vote count and his confidence in his win. He chose not to directly answer those questions. "We're moving forward. We're out doing the work of the people of the 23rd and we're going to continue to focus on that," said Owens. The books on the 23rd Congressional election will only be closed once those absentee ballots are counted. The process begins Tuesday. |
