Clerks Collect License Plate Petitions

People in the North Country are speaking out about required new license plates.

St. Lawrence County clerk Patricia Ritchie says she's heading to Albany Monday with a petition signed by about 70,000 people opposed to the state mandate.

"You have some people who are mad. They're saying enough's enough....to senior citizens saying they're going to have to choose between whether they're going to buy their prescriptions when they have to buy the plates or whether they're going to have to go to the grocery store and cut down on what they're going to be able to buy for groceries," says Ritchie.

She plans to present the petition to Governor Paterson with other clerks from across the state.

As the law stands now, starting in April, when New Yorkers renew their car registration, it will cost the usual fee plus an additional $25 for the new plates.

The state will use the money to help curb a multi-billion dollar deficit.

By April 2012, all New Yorkers are expected to have new license plates.

Governor Paterson's office released a statement Sunday, announcing his intention to eliminate the new license plate requirement if the legislature works with him to find recurring alternative savings measures to replace the revenue that would be lost.
