Tug boats are trying to free a 740-foot Canadian freighter that ran aground in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Cardinal, Ontario, just after 8 a.m. Monday.

Cardinal, Ontario, is across the seaway from Waddington and Ogdensburg.

Canadian seaway officials say the Assiniboine had engine problems and drifted off course, hitting a shoal.

The ship was eastbound with 30,000 tons of grain.

The vessel is outside the main shipping channel and there was no reported spill of fuel or cargo.

There were no injuries.

Wednesday afternoon, the ship off-loaded between 2,500 to 3,000 tons of its grain cargo onto a barge in an effort to re-float the vessel.
