Shipping Season Drops 30 Percent on St. Lawrence Seaway

Tools

It has been a dismal shipping season on the St. Lawrence Seaway, with cargo levels down more than 30 percent from last year.

The section of the Seaway from Lake Ontario to Montreal will close December 29, and the Welland Canal connecting lakes Erie and Ontario will close December 30.

Carol Fenton, an administrator for the Seaway in Massena, says it's the worst downturn the Seaway has ever seen, and is worse than projected.

The weak economy means fewer industries are using the Seaway to move their materials, resulting in a difficult season for the shipping channel.

This is the third year in a row that shipments along the Seaway system have gone down.
