If you've ever driven through the Tug Hill plateau in Lewis County, you can't miss the enormous windmills that dot the landscape - and there are not just one or two, but 195 of them. On a windy day, you can hear the blades woosh through the air. From a distance, it looks like a dance in the sky. They've already been in Lewis County for nearly four years. You'll find that most people love them, but there's a few that still hate them. Others say they find them majestic, they like supporting sustainable energy and don't mind the extra money they make from the project. "You don't even know they're here. The nice thing is you get up in the morning, go look out and see which way the wind is blowing," said John Waligory, who owns land that has wind turbines on it. Some say the turbines' sound drives them batty, they ruin the landscape and disrupt television reception. "We were up here for the view and quiet and it's been invaded by these things and there are so many," said area resident Pat Leviker. We'll take a closer look at just what it's like to live next to and in some cases underneath the Tug Hill's massive wind towers. You can see Caroline Tucker's two-part report Thursday. Part 1 airs at 6 p.m. and Part 2 at 11 p.m. on 7 News. Most Popular |
