There's good news and bad news to report on the north country labor front.

The bad news is that the unemployment rate in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties rose between September and August.

The good news is that the jobless rate isn't as high as the national figure.

Unemployment in the United States for October 2009 stands at 9.5 percent, which remains unchanged from September; it was 6.1 percent a year ago.

In New York state, the jobless rate is 8.7 percent.

St. Lawrence County has the north country's highest rate of unemployment at 9.2 percent - up slightly from September.

In Jefferson County, the rate is 8.4 percent.

In Lewis County, 8 percent of people don't have jobs.

The rate in New York City remained steady at 10.3 percent.
