Tia Christopher is a United States Navy veteran and a sexual assault survivor, something that she says many women are facing in the military.

The Department of Defense recorded more than 2,500 reports of sexual assaults in 2007 alone.

That number, for Christopher, is unacceptable, along with the fact that women are not considered to officially be engaged in combat.

With that label, it affects the treatment women can receive for post traumatic stress (PTS).

Christopher says certain measures, like the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, have made it easier for women to gain access to people that can help in certain situations.

It was an option lacking for her case at the time, but she is glad to see progress made and continue.
