Train Station Rebuilt

A group of community members in Tupper Lake has rebuilt the train station, and they're hoping it will be included as part of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

The new station is a replica of Tupper Lake's first train station that was built in the 1800s.

Volunteers from the group "Next Stop Tupper Lake" raised $130,000 to build it.

It's being used as a railroad museum and welcome center.

The group hopes the scenic rail line will eventually be extended from Saranac Lake to Tupper Lake to provide economic development and tourism opportunities.

"The idea is to have it as a hospitality center. We want it to be a place to welcome people," says program chair Dan McClelland. "We're optimistic that the trains will return here. We've been doing a lot of lobbying as a group to bring them here, and we're hoping it will be a place to sell tickets to riders."

Organizers hope to use a grant to improve landscaping around the train depot next year.
