The owner of the motel where a 32 year old Massena woman died in a fire has had her certificate of occupancy pulled over alleged electrical and fire code violations. Meanwhile, fire investigators believe food left unattended on a stove inside her rental apartment at the Hillside Motel started the blaze that killed Melanie Jones. Town of Massena Code Enforcement Officer Dale Beaulieu told 7 News reporter John Friot that after an inspection of the Hillside Motel Tuesday night owner Joanne Pellegrino was told the building was "unsafe and unacceptable." Jones died from carbon monoxide poisoning after the fire broke out in her apartment. One fire official told 7 News that a smoke alarm inside Jones' apartment was not working beacuse it was missing a battery. Beaulieu said Pellegrino could be charged with violating local building and fire safety codes. Beaulieu said he and a certified electrical inspector went through several of the 30 rental units Tuesday night and "we found several electrical code violations." Beaulieu also said smoke alarms were found in the 15 units that were randomly inspected "but out of those 15 units we only had one working smoke alarm." Beaulieu said "the smoke alarms were there but most of the tenants or people had taken the batteries out." "We posted the building as being unsafe and unoccupiable. We pulled the occupancy of the units until they bring it up to code and repair all the electrical issues and get all the smoke alarms working," said Beaulieu. Pellegrino was unavailable for comment.
