The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino is being touted as the North Country's fifth largest employer - pumping millions of dollars into the local economy.

A number of local and state dignitaries were on hand at the casino Wednesday as Mohawk tribal chiefs cut a ceremonial ribbon marking the completion of a $55 million expansion project that began two years ago.

The casino now has over 1,600 Vegas style slot machines along with 20 table games as well as five dining venues and a gift shop.

The day to day casino operations have provided a big boost to tourism both on and off the reservation.

Chief James Ransom told 7 News tribal leaders have begun preliminary discussions that could bring a 400-room hotel to the casino site.
