As part of his 2010-11 budget, Governor Paterson is proposing to eliminate 'school resource officers' from public schools across the state.

The resource officers who would be affected come from the ranks of the state police. There are 90 such officers statewide, including five in north country school districts - Carthage, General Brown, Thousand Islands, Belleville Henderson and South Jefferson.

The troopers cut from schools will be used to make up for officers who leave the state police each year, and to counter the effect of a two year hiring freeze.

Two other local schools with resource officers - Watertown and Indian River - will not be affected by the cuts. Indian River is staffed by the Jefferson County sheriff's department, while Watertown is staffed through the city police department.

However, in the schools where state police serve, the proposed cut is unpopular.

"They realize, as we all do, that school safety and security is one of our highest priorities," said Jamie Moisel, South Jefferson's school superintendent.
