Two St. Lawrence County firefighters are being hailed as heroes after they entered a burning home and rescued a wheelchair bound man.

Fire crews were called out to the home of Bernie Compo on McIntyre Road in the Town of Oswegatchie just before 9:30 AM.

Lisbon Fire Chief John McLear and Heuvelton Firefighter Wayne Hutton entered the single-story house and pulled Compo to safety.

A dog died in the blaze while Compo was transported to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.

The investigation revealed that an overheated woodstove may be to blame for the fire.
