New York state residents have another big money lottery game to bet on. Powerball tickets went on sale over the weekend, with the first drawing that includes New York Wednesday. As of Tuesday afternoon, the first prize was worth $107 million. 41 state are now reportedly part of the Powerball network. Powerball joins 'Mega Millions' as the second multi-state lottery offered in New York. Powerball's drawings will be Wednesday and Saturday, joining the Tuesday and Friday Mega Millions draws. At the time of the Powerball announcement, a state lottery official said Powerball was not likely to hurt MegaMillions. "With all the states involved, you get these exciting large rollups and huge jackpots that people are interested in and drive sales," a lottery official told the New York Daily News in April 2009. (See complete story here.) The availability of Powerball comes as the lottery overall saw sales grow by 1.3 percent in 2009, (again according to the Daily News, with the full story here) and as New York struggles with a deep financial crisis.
