A two year old child was rescued from a house fire in Carthage during the noon hour Tuesday, according to fire officials.

The child was in a room on the second story of 467 North Washington Street when fire broke out.

A cable television installer who was working on the house put a ladder up to a rear window, climbed to the second floor and saved the toddler, reports 7 News reporter Jessica Cain from the scene.

The child, Skarlette Bernal, was lifted out of the house and brought down the ladder to her mother, Amanda Bernal, according to Jefferson Ciounty fire investigator Dan Leary.

The home is a two family home, and one of the people living in the other half of the house - Ron Darden - told 7 News he tried to run upstairs to get the child, but was driven back by thick smoke. Amanda Bernal also tried to go up, without success.

He  called the cable installer - identified by officials as Jared McNitt of Wells Communications - a hero.

The fire apparently started with a short circuit in a wall of an upstairs room, Leary said.
