Fighting Invasive Species a Priority
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is dedicating time and money to fight a growing problem: invasive species. The invasive species are causing damage by land and by sea. Trees are being destroyed by the Emerald Ash Bohrer and the Asian Longhorn Beetle. The Great Lakes are being invaded by species like Zebra Mussels. DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis says it's a difficult problem to fight. "It's a real uphill battle," says Grannis. "They have no natural enemies, they're not native to our environment, so it's an ongoing effort." Grannis says the DEC has set out strict ballust water restrictions and is using state and federal money to help fight the problem. Most Popular |
