A Chaumont man, who is a retired biology teacher, has made a bequest of $1.24 million to SUNY Cortland, his alma mater.

Michael J. O'Reilly, a Watertown native, received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1958 and a master's degree in education in 1963 from the college.

His bequest is the second largest individual gift in the SUNY Cortland's history.

The money will be used for the creation of a science education scholarship.

O'Reilly taught for 33 years, the last 28 of them in Spring Valley, New York, as part of the East Ramapo Central School District.
