The big Toyota recall on gas pedals has a small, quick fix. It's a shim kit that will stop pedals from sticking. Toyota officials say the problem affects eight models. At Waite Toyota in Watertown, the repair work has already started and will increase as drivers receive recall notices. "We're actually ramping up as we get these parts in. We're ramping up so that we're going to be open longer hours," said Barry Waite, owner of the dealership. Waite says his service department will even have a repair team working Saturdays. The recall affects popular Toyota models like new Camrys, Corollas and Highlanders. But not all cars have to have the fix. The pedal problem has been traced back to one American manufacturer. If your car doesn't have that pedal, you don't have to have any work done. "If your serial number begins with a 'J', it means the car was built in Japan. That does not have this type of pedal on it," said Waite. When you take your car in, service workers will tell you whether or not your car needs fixing. In most cases it takes a half hour to get a car back up to speed - time Waite says his staff is more than willing to spend making things right. "We'll do whatever it takes," said Waite. A second, smaller recall is expected to address apparent brake problems with the Toyota Prius hybrid. Dealerships like Waite Toyota are still waiting for word about a possible fix there. On Wednesday, Toyota will be the focus of a hearing in Washington to see if company officials acted fast enough for their customers. |
