Everywhere in Ogdensburg, you'll see signs supporting the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility and saveourprison.com.

It is the effort of a community to keep the facility open after being faced with so many closures and job losses in the last two years.

However, the state is convinced the 28-year-old prison is on the losing end of priorities, especially when it comes to taxpayers in New York.

"The time has come on behalf of state taxpayers when we really need to look at consolidating and right-sizing the system," Erik Kriss of the New York State Correctional Services said.

Currently, the Ogdensburg prison is working at 80 to 90 percent capacity with about 490 inmates and 122 unoccupied beds, while the state inmate population is down by 8 percent.

Other factors played a role in Ogdensburg being choosen, including a savings of $24 million in annual operating costs and $12.4 million in system upgrades, including a new boiler.

But no matter what reasons the state offers, it brings no comfort to business owners and residents of the area, including John Farrand.

"We're all going to be affected.  I don't know how this community is going to be able to stand the loss."
