Garrett Loomis was recalled as a firefighter and a person who "enjoyed and loved life" during a memorial service Thursday in Sackets Harbor. Loomis, 26, died Sunday while on a burning silo at a farm on county route 75. The burning silo was near a large barn that burned Thursday, killing one hundred head of cattle. The silo exploded. Loomis, a 2001 graduate of Sackets Harbor Central, had just been elected assistant chief of the Sackets department. He was also a fulltime firefighter at Fort Drum.
"You always felt safe with Garrett," said a friend, Max DelSignore, who spoke during the memorial service. "Being a leader came naturally." "Garrett was caring, driven, loyal and one of the most brutally honest individuals I've ever known," said DelSignore. "You couldn't help but admire the selfless nature he exhibited every day." In the crowd, friends of Loomis hugged and held each other as speakers extolled him. "Garrett lived his life fully, he gave his life freely," said Fr. Douglas Comstock from St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Alexandria Bay. "His spirit has been infectious. Keep that spirit alive in you."
