Clarkson University students set out to break a record by sitting down Saturday, and ended up standing up for a very important cause.

They took on a challenge called lap-sitting to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Students and community members stood in a circle and all sat on the knees of the person behind them.

"What that represents is everyone supporting each other and how that's significant for our cause," says Jennifer Hinrichs, who helped organize the event.

More than 2,000 people showed up for the event, but that wasn't enough to break the national record.

Still, it broke a Clarkson University record.

In 1977, only 1,968 people showed up to the lap-sit.

For some participants, the fundraiser hit close to home.

"Twenty-six years ago this month, my father passed away from a brain tumor," says Andrew Cox.

The fundraiser brought in more than $4,000 for the American Cancer Society, and as for the lap-sit, students say it's OK they didn't break the record this year.

They plan on trying again next year.
