Learning About Chinooks and Apaches

By Kris Rusho

CW2 Jon Thilges from Task Force 3-10 and CW2 Matt Rood from Task Force 6-6 explain the duties and workings of chinook and apache helicopters.

Thilges explains that the Chinook helicopter is used for troop and supply transport, but the one on the Morning Show is fairly new compared to the ones he was flying in Iraq last year and, in Thilges's words, "like going from the stone age into the computer technology."

"We have computers on board that manage a lot of the systems that help us maintain situational awareness throughout the flight."

In comparison, the Apache helicopter is an attack aircraft and Rood says that it is one of the most sophisticated aircrafts in the world.

When Rood is wearing his helmet and moving his head back and forth, the gun turret underneath the Apache moves with him, with a trigger button on the helmet.

"All you have to do is look at your target and pull the trigger."

Amazingly enough, the Chinook, the larger of the two aircrafts, is actually faster than the Apache.
