Scozzafava Talks State Budget, Re-Districting

By Kris Rusho

Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava joined the Morning Show to talk about the state budget issues and where she stands.

Scozzafava voted in favor of the education bills, but voted against the health care option, but said it has been a difficult to say whether or not the budget was balanced or not.

While not seeking re-election, Scozzafava believes that there is no excuse for not having the budget done in April, but with the 2010 elections, re-districting and a small majority, lawmakers seem to be distracted.

"Its not a united conference on all issues, so it makes it very difficult.  I think the governor has done a good job in exhibiting some leadership in the last month or so by holding the legislatures's feet to the fire so to speak, so that we have to take action."

Dede believes talks will continue at some point, despite Governor Paterson saying that they are over.

However, one bill is written that prisoners may not be counted as residents of the North Country and that could propose a problem for funding that comes into the area.

"(With re-districting) it's obvious that the goal is to count more bodies downstate and in New York City in order to re-draw the lines in different ways to benefit a certain party...we really should be looking at non-partisan re-districting."
