A Fast Way To Unload Your Scrap Metal

There's money in metal.

For 28 years it was Perkins Scrap Metal on Factory Square.

Now is has merged and moved.

"We were a small family-owned businesses.  Now we've become part of a larger family," said Ed Perkins of Empire Recycling Watertown.

What was the Black Clawson machine shop in Watertown is now Empire Recycling Watertown.

It has 75,000 square feet so you can drive right in with whatever you have.

"If it's made of metal, we'll take it. A car - yes, we'll take it," said Ed Kowalsky, vice president of Empire Recycling.

Empire, which has eight other locations, put $2.5 million into the building and machinery.

"This is our first all-indoor facility and we hope to add more of this type of facility in other parts of the state," said Kowalsky.

All vehicles go across outdoor scales and through a scanner that detects anything radioactive.

But the business end, from weighing to paying, is all inside.
.
The company says the indoor operation is also more environmentally friendly.

If anything dangerous gets spilled, it's on a concrete floor and can be easily cleaned up.

The company will also go get scrap metal from bigger commercial accounts.

All in all, it expects to buy and sell 30,000 tons of metal a year.
