ATM Stolen From SLU Bookstore

Police in Canton are asking for the public's help finding the people who stole an ATM from the entrance to St. Lawrence University's bookstore.

"You've got to be very brazen in trying to accomplish something like that," said interim Police Chief Victor Rycroft.

Village police say the theft happened sometime after 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Employees of the Brewer Bookstore noticed the ATM was missing when they opened the next day, but thought it was out for maintenance.

The theft was reported to police shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday.

The ATM, which belongs to North Country Savings Bank, was not connected to any alarms and contains no electronic tracking device.

Authorities say it had just been restocked with money last Wednesday prior to students leaving for the Thanksgiving break, but it is unknown how much money may have remained inside pending an audit by bank officials.

The ATM weighed more than 260 pounds.

Police say it probably took two or more people to remove it.
 
The thieves carried the ATM out the bookstore's front door, through a well-lit area to an adjacent parking lot where it was loaded into a vehicle.

Police and university security are reviewing surveillance camera recordings for clues.

Police say the thieves' activity could have gone unnoticed because of the large number of people walking by after that night's SLU hockey game.
