A 22 year old Fort Drum soldier has pleaded not guilty in St. Lawrence County Court to charges that he "recklessly" killed his girlfriend's infant son.

Gary McKenzie was arraigned Monday on a four count indictment charging him with murder, manslaughter, reckless assault of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

McKenzie is accused of throwing six month old Braylin Chambers to the floor so hard it fractured the infant's skull causing severe and inoperable brain injuries.

The July 16 incident happened inside a townhouse apartment at Butternut Hill in Gouverneur while McKenzie was watching the infant for his girlfriend.

The child died after being removed from life support the next day in a Syracuse hospital.

McKenzie claims he tripped on a diaper bag and accidently dropped the infant.
