After 6 Years Without, Police Union Ratifies Contract

The union representing New York's University Police, Park Police, Environmental Conservation Officers and Forest Rangers has ratified a new contract with the state after six years without one.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Manuel Vilar, president of the Police Benevolent Association of New York State (PBANYS), announced the ratification on Tuesday. The union says more than 95 percent of members voted yes.

The contract resolves wage and contractual issues dating to 2005, ensures protections against layoffs, and offers health benefits commensurate with other state bargaining units.

There is no wage increase for 2011-13 and a 2 percent increase in 2014.

The contract includes 9 days of deficit reduction leave and increases to the health insurance premium.
