Alexandria Bay Welcoming Canadian Tourist Dollars

Alexandria Bay is open for business!

"It's the kick-off for the whole summer season. Alexandria Bay is tourism based and we're ready," said Susan Boyer, executive director of the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce.

The village is waiting on Canadian tourists.

It's Victoria Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer for Canadians.

That means a lot of them will head to the north country to see the sights.

Officials at Boldt Castle hopes the most recent renovations will draw in business.

"You're going to see some beautiful improvements. We have a brand new movie theater for the life and times of George Boldt," said Shane Sanford, director of Boldt Facilities.

A change set for June 1 could encourage Canadians to shop.

The amount of goods Canadians can take home tax free on each trip will increase significantly.

"They can do more shopping here with out having to stay twice as long, you know, so they're not limited on what they want to take back," said  Boyer.

To welcome Canadian tourists, Alexandria Bay is hosting a series of events this weekend, from discounted shopping to a dance on Sunday night.

"We're doing a special promotion, the chamber of commerce is, to entice as many of our Canadian friends across the border," said Ron Thomson, owner of Uncle Sam Boat Tours.

Alexandria Bay businesses hope a solid Victoria Day weekend will be the kick-off to a successful summer season.
