American Legion Post Offers Place To Dispose Of Old Glory

Respect for your American flag starts when you buy it, but doesn't end when you throw it away.

A north country American Legion post is helping make sure the flag gets the respect it deserves.

Lowville Post 162 has installed a flag drop-off box behind its Dayan Street headquarters.

When your flag has seen its best days, you can simply stop by and drop it in the box.

Legion members will collect it for a Flag Day ceremony.

That's when the flags will be disposed of in accordance with the U.S. flag code in a ceremonial burning.

"There's a whole procedure that we go through, inspecting each flag individually to make sure that it's truly unserviceable and then it's disposed of properly in an honorable way," said Lee Hinkleman, post commander.

The drop-off box has already seen heavy use in the first month it has been up.

It's a former post office mailbox and the refinishing and lettering were donated by local businesses.
