Arson May Be To Blame For Watertown Fire

Watertown fire officials say arson may be to blame for a fire in an abandoned building in the city.

Battalion Chief Patrick Wiley said the blaze was "possibly set by persons unknown."

The call came in at approximately 8:30 a.m. Monday that the building off West Main Street was full of smoke.

Employees at nearby Jefferson Rehabilitation Center spotted the fire and called authorities.

When firefighters arrived, they initially had difficulty finding the source since smoke filled the entire building.

Wiley said they found a concrete trench and that 12 feet of trash was on fire.

"Once we located it, they knocked it down and ventilated the building," said Wiley.

The owner of the building is unknown, but officials said someone may have been living there.

No injuries were reported.
