Assault Weapon Owners Now Must Register Guns

Owners of so-called "assault weapons" in New York now officially have one year to register their guns.

Monday marked the first day forms were available either on the state police website or at sheriff's department.

The state's controversial new gun law requires all owners of rifles with certain features to register.

Personal information and details about the gun are required on the new forms.

The forms are due by April 15, 2014.

New York's affiliate of the National Rifle Association says it expects to ask a federal judge to immediately halt the magazine limit.

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association says the law violates the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens "to keep commonly possessed firearms."

Association president Tom King says they are advising members to obey the law until it's proven unconstitutional.
