An infant was rescued from the St. Lawrence River Tuesday night.

Alexandria Bay police say family members reported a baby had fallen in the river near an island in Canadian waters just after  7 p.m.

The 19-month-old was taken by boat to the dock at River Hospital, where the baby was treated for about an hour before being airlifted by helicopter to a Syracuse hospital.

Alexandria Bay Fire Chief said the baby was crying when a doctor carried it from the boat.
